Now This is a Race Medal: An Actual Piece of Hayward Field

NOTE: Eugene Marathon is a sponsor partner of Believe in the Run.

Remember that time you hung out at Hayward Field in the 60s, slinging beers in the stands as Steve Prefontaine battled Frank Shorter on the straights and curves of the University of Oregon’s iconic track? Yeah, us neither. *sigh*

Luckily, you can still experience a piece of Hayward lore with one of the coolest race medals we’ve ever seen: a “medal” made from the old wooden steps of Hayward Field (the field was recently renovated). For the 2021 Virtual Eugene Marathon, all full and half marathon finishers will receive the medal, in addition to some other great swag, including a Nike Running race shirt, pom-pom beanie, gaiter, water bottle, and a ton more. (For real, it’s one of the best swag packages we’ve ever seen.)

Other distances include the 5K and Kids DuckDash, with varying swag for each event (note: these events do not include the wooden Hayward medal).

The Eugene Marathon is known for unique events – this past spring, they organized half marathons for both Galen Rupp and Sara Hall, where Rupp went on to set an American 10-mile record while Hall ran the 6th fastest American half marathon ever.

Like all live events, it’s been a totally unpredictable year for the Eugene Marathon. We all want to be back in-person, and no one wants it more than the events themselves. But they’ve bridged the gap with one of the better virtual race experiences we’ve seen.

In addition to all the swag listed above (for a full rundown, check out the distance and swag tiers), the Eugene Marathon is also offering a Virtual Eugene Marathon app that includes tracking and results, a live-streamed finish festival, a virtual expo experience, and priority registration for 2022.

Oh, also, you can save 25% off the Marathon or Half Marathon by using code BITR. It’s almost like you’re breaking into Hayward Field in the middle of the night and stealing a bench.

Race weekend is April 23-25, 2021, but you can run your virtual miles any time between April 23 and May 2, 2021.
