The Transrockies race started today in Buena Vista. The nervous excitement was palpable as we arrived. The town is tiny and kind of adorable (total population: 2,660). Packet pick up was held in the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. We arrived just after 1pm so most of the lines had died down by the time we were there. This year the race kits include a 120 lb duffle bag (which is used to lug all your gear around for six days), a race tech tee, Saltstick caps, Kicking Horse coffee beans, and a Gatorade sweat towel. All in all, it is a pretty painless packet pickups (400 total runners).

After we collected our race kits we headed over to the Surf Chateau to check-in. This hotel is amazing. It’s brand new, located directly next to the starting-line and, on par with this town, is tiny and adorable. Everything about the place is modern – there is no need for a key (they give you a code to type into the door) and all of the appliances and light fixtures are top notch. They’ve done a great job with decor. It’s simplistic and modern but still gives you that cozy feel of a cabin in the mountains.

After we settled in, we headed over to orientation for a rundown on the event and Stage 1. They briefed us on everything from the weather to meal times. The staff seem like a lot of fun; the operations manager, Houda, was particularly entertaining. He made it clear that the beer truck is the real priority. That shouldn’t be too difficult.

Once we were briefed on logistics, we headed over to Eddyline for a brew and a burger. Everything was great. With bags packed and gear laid out, we’re excited to start day 1 of the Transrockies Run.
