Saucony Guide 9 Running Shoe Review

The Good

Meaghan: The Saucony Guide 9 is a supportive daily trainer. I typically avoid support shoes because I dislike the stiffness that accompanies them. However, the Guide 9 is a really comfortable shoe. The last Guide model I tested was the 7, back in 2013. This is a major update from that shoe –  all good improvements. First, aesthetics. No longer is the upper a barrage of thick, shiny overlays! Whoop! My main complaint with the Guide 7 was its resemblance to a Barbie glitter explosion. Anyway, Saucony uses FlexFilm (originally developed for Saucony’s racing line) to replace traditional overlays that make for a more breathable, less bulky upper. The RUNDRY collar material remains the same, providing that extra plush comfort. The Guide 9 also got a midsole update with the debut of EVERUN. Saucony actually calls this layer the “topsole” – you’ll find a 3mm layer of EVERUN directly underneath the sockliner. EVERUN + dual density SSL EVA replaces the POWERGRID midsole in previous models. You can read more about the technology behind EVERUN here. The new outsole, called TRI-FLEX, is really durable. It’s intended to work with the EVERUN material and help disperse impact. I can’t really argue that point, but the ride in general felt smoother from landing to toe-off than previous models.

The Bad

Meaghan: There are two downsides to this shoe for me. The weight and the stiffness. While Saucony suggests the W8 weighs 8.2oz my W7.5 came in at 8.7oz. The stiffness is the inherent nature of a stability shoe. While some people want/need the extra firm ride, I prefer a softer landing, especially for the high mileage days.

The Conclusion

Meaghan: I really like the updates to the Guide 9. The FlexFilm upper and the EVERUN topsole are both solid additions. Plus, I love the new look. This is actually one of my favorite-looking shoes right now. I find myself lacing these up for trips to the grocery store on the reg. I would recommend this shoe to anyone needing a little extra support for their everyday training. I also think loyal Guide wearers will enjoy the updates.

  1. River runner says:

Would you say this shoe is firmer or softer than the Guide 7? Thanks

  2. I have had the Guides 5,6,7,8, and now the 9. The 6 was my favorite, with the 8 right behind. I was so excited to get the 9, but to my dismay, my feet hurt terribly with them. My left foot will actually throb and tingle. I am so sad! I may go and grab up another pair of 8s while they are still around.
