Newton Fate Shoe Review

Authored by: Meaghan Murray

The Good

Newton has been coming out with some sick colorways this year, and the Fate is no exception. The lime outsole covered with magenta accents and 360 degrees of reflective overlay make this shoe stand out just about anywhere. It’s generally awesome looking, but it’s a lot more than just a pretty shoe.

The Fate is a neutral trainer designed for a lot of miles and everyday use. It’s similar to the Kismet, but without the extra stability, in other words, with a little less material in the arch area. It’s nice and light, 7.6 oz and super breathable. The first thing I noticed about this shoe is the barely-there feel of the upper. The tongue and collar have a pillowy-like feel without the extra material seen in most daily trainers. The Fate has a smooth, sock-like fit; even my wide feet were comfortable in them. I found the toebox to be nice and open with plenty of room for toe-splay.

Newton recently segmented their 5-lug shoes into three categories: POP 1, POP 2, and POP 3. POP 1 is the most responsive, while POP 3 is the least responsive. The Fate fall right in the middle, designed with the POP 2 platform. This is my 6th pair of Newton’s so I’m fairly well adjusted to the feel of lugs underfoot. What’s nice about the Fate is that you get the extra responsiveness from the lugs, but they’re not overly-prominent throughout the run.

The Bad

My negative comments about this shoe are indirect. While this shoe is great for most days, sometimes my feet want something a little softer underfoot. Training for ultras means back to back long runs and the responsive ride isn’t always what I want on tired feet. While I wouldn’t change much, or anything, about this shoe – I’d recommend adding a softer shoe in your daily rotation (Something like the Saucony Kinvara 5 or Virrata 2).

The Conclusion

The Newton Fate is an awesome shoe. I’ve put just under 200 miles on mine and they’re still in great shape. I’ve worn down some traction on the lugs, but nothing that’s been noticeable by feel. They’re versatile; I’ve worn them on multiple 20+ mile runs and around the track. The lugs aren’t overly prominent, but you definitely feel the pop they provide. At $129, this is a relatively-affordable option, particularly from Newton.  I recommend you at least try them on. It could just be your Fate.
