Saucony Progrid Kinvara 3 running shoe review after 300 + miles

After running more the 300 miles in the Saucony Kinvara 3, I have to say I am impressed. The shoe maintains all the qualities I liked in Kinvara 1 and 2. The Kinvara 3 is superior to it’s predessesors when it come to holding up both in the upper and the sole of the shoe. Saucony has created a super light weight trainer that I would recommend for everything from 5k to Marathon and beyond. Here is our original write up on Kinvara 3. In the video below I give visual proof on how well the Saucony Progrid Kinvara 3 running shoe held up over 300 miles. Everybody has different experience with wear patterns, here are some stats that effect wear in this running shoe review: Weight = 165 lb, Height = 5’10.5″, Footstrike = midfoot, Average weekly mileage = 60-70 miles.

Great review! I just did my long run in the Kinvara 2's (I think) and my feet which had been sore took the pounding pretty well. I wear these on trails as well as pavement.

I really enjoy your reviews. I bought these as a shoe to have for my longer runs, compared to my Adidas Adios 2 but found the K3 to be a bit too soft for my taste and too roomy in front (even though one "should" have a roomier front when using mid-foot strike. Perhaps I have a size too large.) But for those who want a bit softer shoe than the Adios, this would be great. I now alternate between Adios and Adidas Motion, which I find have a very nice firmness. Alright! Thanks again.

Vince, I haven’t tried out many of the Adidas shoes. Would you be interested in reviewing either of the Adidas shoes you mentioned for the Believe in the Run site?

Thanks Janet, I think it’s time to try the threes. Let me know what you think.

Thomas, sure thing! Drop me a mail and we’ll get rolling.

Does anybody actually measured the heel to toe drop of the Kinvara 3? Saucony said that the drop is 4mm, Runner’s World said it is 7mm, who is right? I think that the heel to toe drop of the Kinvara 3 more close to 8mm than to 4mm.

  • Thomas Neuberger Posted on 11/12/2012 at 10:05 am

    Hi Marcelo,

It is a 4mm drop. Many reviews have backed up the 4mm drop by measuring the shoe with calipers. I run in everything from 0 to 8mm drops right now. By feel alone I would say that the Kinvara is right on the money at 4mm.

[…] The Saucony Kinvara 3 fixed the only issue I had with the previous models of this shoe. With improved rubber coverage on the sole of the shoe I was able to get many more miles out of the shoe. This is the go to shoe I would recommend over and over throughout the year. It is a perfect shoe to start your journey to lighter, faster, lower drop running shoes. The Kinvara 4 will be out soon and it looks like the improvement this time will be in the upper. The only complaint I ever heard regarding the Kinvara 3 was that the colar of the shoe would rub some peoples Achilles too much.
