You gotta have friends.

From Left to Right Me, Brodie, Katie before the CCR NCR 20 Miler

I guess when I used to think about running I thought of it as an individual sport.  I was wrong. These past few months of training has made it crystal clear.

I have trained for all 7 of my previous marathons with Jeff Arricale.  At the end of the Spring marathon season Jeff let me know he was taking a break.  The training has not been the same.  Having a partner to run the long Saturday runs with makes a huge difference.  When you run with a partner you push each other to run faster even if you don’t feel like it.  You make it out to the start of the run with purpose.  I find myself running slower this training.  I think a lot of it is that I don’t have anyone to keep up with.  I am running Chicago next month and have no clue what my time will be.

On the flip side other running friends are helping me out.  Juda’s Tuesday track nights introduced me to a group of pretty decent runners and had me doing organized speed work.  Mean Jeanne the BOMF running machine and I have become closer this season and have done some of our own track workouts followed by a cup of coffee and some conversation at Starbuck’s.  Katie from Charm City Run joined me for some of my last runs around the Baltimore harbor and showed me how fast she really is when she finishes 20 mile runs 30 minutes in front of me.  My friend Brodie and I reconnected with in the crowd of runners at the Maryland 1/2 Marathon. Brodie came up from Silver Spring early in the morning to Baltimore for the Charm City Run NCR trail 20 Miler last weekend to run it with me.  Brodie is a much faster runner than me. I really appreciate that he stayed by my side giving me encouragement the entire time.  Thanks Brodie.

Once I realized that travel to the Montreal Marathon was going to be prohibitive, Katie let me know she knew someone that had extra rooms reserved in Chicago for the marathon weekend.  Jeff had an extra bib for Chicago.  Everything fell into place and now I will be running the Chicago marathon.  Awesome.

One other set of friends that have helped out are all the people I virtually run with on Dailymile.com.  So I guess I did not train all by myself for this Falls race; I had a lot of help.

PS – I found out that I did not make the wait list cut offs for the North Face Challenge 50k.  Might be a blessing in disguise.  I am really looking forward to Chicago.

Whoa! was that August that just flew by?!

What a crazy summer this has been.  Time has just flown by.  I am swamped at work and my personal life has been just as busy.  The runs in August are not fun just hot humid and long.  I never got around to booking my flight to Montreal until last week, well I looked into booking the flight last week.  There are no flights from Baltimore direct to Montreal.  After looking for quite sometime at all the options, I decided to bag the trip and forfeit my marathon entry fee.  I started looking at other options for my fall run.

NORTH FACE ENDURANCE CHALLENGE

NORTH FACE ENDURANCE CHALLENGE

I landed on an ambitious choice.  I am wait listed on the North Face 50k Endurance Challenge in Washington DC.  I registered on Active.com, it wasn’t exactly clear on how I will find out if I make the list. Keep your fingers crossed for me.  Check out the North Face Challenge.

Love Triangle ends in near disaster!

maryland BelieveintherunIt’s not what you think. Friday night I had a long overdue date night with my wife. We went out for crabs and if you know anything about eating crabs in Maryland you have to have beer to wash them down. I knew most likely, I would not feel like running 15 miles Saturday morning. That is the set up, here is what happened next.

I thought I would just run on Sunday morning instead of my typical Saturday morning run but then, I had to return a pair of shorts to Charm City Running. While I was there I decided to get a new pair of running shoes. The Nike LunarTrainers are good for tempo runs and track workouts but I don’t know how much I trust them on the long runs. I decided to get a more traditional shoe for the long runs. I tried on the Asics Nimbus 11, Nike Vomero 4, and the Brooks Defyance 2. I was surprised that I ended up with the Brooks. The difference between the Nike $135 vs Brooks $80 was slim. As a matter of fact the only difference I could feel was the Nike had slightly more cushion in the front of the shoe. So now I have the 1st part of the love triangle, a new pair of running shoes.  I love new running shoes!  I might even admit to having a problem.

Brooks Defyance 2

Brooks Defyance 2

It is late in the afternoon Saturday, I went with my wife to walk the dog (Vincent) and take Theo for a stroll through our neighborhood while she picked up some wine at our local shop. I started thinking, if I run now instead of tomorrow morning, I could drink some wine and chill out tonight. BRILLIANT! Who cares that it is 90º F and close to 100% humidity. In case your keeping score, the second love is wine.

With a new pair of running shoes begging to get out of the box and fulfill their destiny, I figure I will down some Hammer Enduralytes and bring my water with money to re-up on the water. Running is the third love in the triangle. The first 3 miles were pretty hot but I was doing well. I ran past all the Boston Red Socks fans heading to Oriole Park, and made my way to the Statue of Johnny Unitas outside of the Raven’s Stadium. I tapped Johnny U’s foot for luck and kept moving. Wow, it was getting hot. I trudge on, not my best pace but I figure not to shabby considering the heat.

I was through my first bottle of water 4 miles into the run. The loop around Fort McHenry has a water fountain so I fill up there. Next stop would be at the 8 mile mark and I am parched. I stopped in a coffee shop and poured ice water from a pitcher into my bottle. Man! The ice water tasted AWESOME! I gulped it greedily. At the 11 Mile mark I stopped at a CVS to get another bottle of water. I thought checking out in the “self checkout” lane would be faster and I could avoid the embarrassment of handing over sweat soaked dollar bills. It took me an extra 5 minutes trying to get the bill feeder to take my money. My legs are stiff when I leave the store but now, I am on my way home. It is all uphill on the way back and I am spent. As I get to 14 miles I hit the wall, I HAVE to walk. I have accepted that I am beat on this run. After a couple minutes I start running again. My Garmin is telling me I am close to the 15 mile mark and at 14.75 I was finished running and now walking the last .25 and feeling very light headed. I get inside and down cold water and some Recoverite. A hop in the shower to rinse off and I will be free to enjoy some wine.

Here is the funny thing. I felt so out of it that I was able to only have one glass of wine and I didn’t even enjoy it. I was all googly inside. So, I got my long run in, and learned a lesson. I will avoid the heat at all cost.

18 Miles PreRun Set Up, Juda Props

All Layed Out

All Layed Out

I don’t know how you get ready for a big run but, for me, I start right after I finish my Thursday run.  I take Fridays off so that my legs are fresh for the long run on Saturday.  On Friday, I am more conscience of how much I hydrate and what I eat.  I avoid alcohol on Friday nights (some Fridays are easier then others).  Friday dinners are usually high in protein and carbs.  I know that there is a lot of different opinions out there about running diets however, a turkey pasta dinner has never done me wrong.

After dinner I lay all my gear out.  I do it now so that I don’t stumble around in the morning looking for stuff with the added pressure of trying to meet people at a certain time.  Laying it out also helps me to start visualizing the run.  It helps me to know my best and most comfortable gear is ready to go.  After the main gear is all together I get my accessories out.  Everything from my water bottle to my iPod.  Below is a list of all the gear I assembled for tomorrow’s run:

  • Nike Shorts
  • North Face Performance Tee
  • Nike Fit Visor
  • Balga Socks
  • Nike LunarTrainers (first time running in them)
  • Ultimate Direction Water Bottle
  • Road ID (makes my wife happy)
  • Phiten Titanium Necklace
  • Garmin 405
  • Hammer Nutrition Enduralytes
  • Clif Bloks
  • GU Chomps
  • iPod Nano
  • Nathan 7.5k Elite Pack (to hold it all)

As you see I travel light.  Now all I got to do is get a good night of sleep.  Tomorrow (Saturday) I will get up at 6 a.m. and eat a PB&J, stretch, and head down to the Baltimore Inner Harbor.  There is a supported run on the Baltimore Marathon course with water stops every four miles.  It is a nice way to prep for the marathon.  Hopefully, running with the large group will make the 18 miles go by a little faster.

IronmanBig props to Juda McGannon, my trainer and partner for the 2010 TransRockies run.  Juda is competing in the Ford Ironman Lake Placid Triathlon.  That is a 2.4 mi. swim • 112 mi. bike • 26.2 mi. run, AWESOME!  I call that a full day.  Good luck Juda!

Whirl Wind Week!

Man, this was a busy week!  I only did three of the five workouts scheduled.  Tuesday, I went up to Boston to visit the New Balance headquarters.

Lunch at Bleecher's (Fenway Park) after the meeting with New Balance

Lunch at Bleecher's (Fenway Park) after the meeting with New Balance

It was a real treat to see some of the designs for next year’s running shoes.  We left Baltimore at 4:30 a.m. and got back at 11:45 p.m.  So, my Tuesday speed-work was toast.  I never recovered the sleep lost on Tuesday, and ended up missing my Wednesday morning workout too.  It was worth it and the people at New Balance were great and it was nice to put faces to some of the folks we work with.

While we were in Boston I checked out the City Sports on Newbury St.  It is a much better store than the one in Baltimore.  The help was actually knowledgeable about the running shoes and their stock of running shoes and gear was comprehensive.  They carried all the regular players – Nike, New Balance, Asics, Brooks, and even had a few of the more obscure brands like Karhu, Newton, Vibram FiveFingers. I hope they beef up the Baltimore store.

I have a lot of work to do at the office and this was a short week so, I am working in hyper-drive.  Wednesday we had a Warschawski team building event.  We went to Oriole Park to watch the O’s play the Boston Red Sox.  It was a good game even though we lost.  I was soo tired and went to bed early with every intention of running in the morning.  I needed the sleep and just skipped the run.  Luckily, I would be off on Friday and could do my Thursday run then.

With it being a holiday week too, there was way too much eating and drinking.  Sometimes I feel guilty, like I am cheating on running when I over consume.  You gotta have a full life and sometimes that means running takes a back seat for a week.  I will get over it.

I do admit that training is harder without having the running partner for the long runs, I may need to hit some of the running groups and find some more people that run my pace.

I will get back on track this week.  Happy trails.

Training, Speed Work, Baltimore 10 Miler

I found out that the training program I was following was NUTS!  I am going back to the “Less is More Training” plan.  I used this plan when I trained for the National Marathon, it is a great training program.  I recommend it for anyone at any level, check it out.

I have been doing the Charm City track work outs with Juda on Tuesday nights.  Juda knows how to kick your ass, and you like her for it.  The group is made up by about 20 runners in flux every week.  It is a nice group of people from elite to newbie, best of all it is free. ” Those workouts give just as much back to me.”Juda Campbell McGannon

I will be running the Baltimore 10 Miler this weekend, hope to see you out there.

Go USA! Montreal here I come.

beliveintherun_USAToday is Memorial Day.  A big thank you to all those that have served the U.S.A.  Special thanks to my Grandfather Ferdinand (US Army), my Father Henry (US Navy), and Brother-in-law Stewart (US Marines) for their service.

This week officially kicks off my Fall Marathon training. I have picked an aggressive training schedule for the Marathon Oasis de Montreal (Sept. 13, 2009).  Between mid-March (National Marathon) and now I have maintained my running fitness with about 25 miles a week.  Montreal will be my 8th marathon, and my first international marathon.  I am excited to see the city by foot, and psyched that the race ends in the olympic stadium.  Cindy (my wife) and Theo (my son) will be there too.  We are turning the trip into a mini family vacation.  Jeff Arricale is going to run the race with me.  This training will also be for the New York Marathon (Nov. 1, 2009) as well.  I will find out if I got in through the lottery soon.

I will be interviewing some of the people running the TransRockies with me in 2010, and posting those interviews here on the site over the next few weeks.

Tapered back the miles a bit for the last week

I put in a little over 23 miles this past week.  Either I am getting slower or Jeff is getting faster.  I think Jeff is getting faster.  This has inspired me to start working out with weigts.  I have put in a call to a friend that can help me find my way around the gym a little better.  The runs are feeling great and I don’t have any injuries currently, it is a nice feeling to have as I get ready to start training for the Fall marathons.

33 miles this week.

Theo's First Run

Theo's First Run

I had a great week of running.  This week I ran just to run.  Training for the Oasis de Montreal Marathon wont officially start for another 3 weeks.  I ran with Jeff Arricale a couple times this week.  He is looking strong again.  On Saturday’s 10 miler I felt he could have run a lot faster without me.

The highlight of the week has to be my 5 mile run this morning (Sunday) with Theo.  We tried out the B.O.B. Revolution.  Although I have nothing to compare it to, I think it is awesome.  The B.O.B. has a really smooth ride and is easy to navigate.  We ran through the harbor and past the new Ritz Carlton residences.  To my surprise Theo did not sleep but, he seemed to enjoy the ride.  One added benefit of running with Theo is that Cindy gets some quiet time to herself.

A special shout out to my friend Jeanne Bayers.  Jeanne qualified for the Boston Marathon during the Baltimore Marathon.  The Baltimore Marathon is a tough course.  Jeanne is running the Boston Marathon tomorrow! I am routing for you Jeanne.

Jeanne is on DailyMile too, if you haven’t you should “friend” her.

I have picked the training plan I will be using to train for the Oasis de Montreal Marathon September 13, 2009.  It looks like it will be challenging.
