It was another great week of training! The mileage was down but the speed was up. A special thanks to the dailymile friends that showed up Saturday and ran one of my last longer runs with me. A very special group. We are getting down to the wire here, I actually am leaving for Colorado tomorrow morning, I can’t wait!

Here is a re-cap of this weeks training:

Tuesday, August 10: 6.24 miles – I didn’t really have a goal for this run but as I watched the Garmin I thought it would be nice to be in the 8′s today. It was a struggle my head is always telling me I am not a speedy guy, I am a slow and steady guy. Give in to the 9 minute mile, relax. This was a small victory. The splits are all over the place: Mile 1: 7:55 / Mile 2: 9:19 / Mile 3: 8:53 / Mile 4: 9:40 / Mile 5: 9:15 / Mile 6: 8:55 / Mile .24: 8:01

Wednesday, August 11: 8 miles on bike, 2 miles on treadmill 15% incline, 100 sit-ups, 50 push-ups, 50 squats

Thursday, August 12: 6.45 miles – Awesome hill run with Juda this morning! The skies got dark the winds picked up and the skies opened up and dumped on us. It was awesome! We ran over to Bellemore Rd. and used it as our hill. It was like a river. Great run.

Saturday, August 14: 9.05 miles – Great run for several reasons: 1. Weather was perfect 2. Got to run with some great people 3. I felt fantastic. 4. I love running in downtown B’more. I am lucky to have such good people around me. Big thank to Jeanne for setting up this meetup. Thanks to Brodie, Mike, Kathleen, Juda, John, and Darryn for all your support. I really had a great run today here are the splits: Mile 1: 10:27 / Mile 2: 9:27 / Mile 3: 9:10 / Mile 4: 9:20 / Mile 5: 9:59 / Mile 6: 8:18 / Mile 7: 8:33 / Mile 8: 8:30 / Mile 9: 8:41

Sunday, August 15: 12 miles – 1st run Hot to Trot 4 mile race: Alright, if you know me then you know I don’t run in the 7′s. Â I was as surprised as you when I saw my splits at the Hot To Trot 4 mile GPS race. Check them out:
Warm up: 8:53 / Mile 1: 7:16 / Mile 2: 7:51 / Mile 3: 8:01 / Mile 4: 7:50
2nd run, cool down: This mornings 4 mile race was a good confidence booster for my training. I had twelve on the training schedule so after my 4 mile run with a half mile warm up, I continued on the trail to get my miles in. Good day, last double digit run before the main event.

Week five was a great confidence booster. I had a milestone mileage week with a total of 64 miles. My body feels strong and is functioning well. Here is a breakdown of the activity:

Monday August 12: 6 miles The training is working, after two decent runs this weekend my legs still felt good this morning. I still had pep in my step.

Tuesday August 13: 3 easy miles in the morning then 4 miles at the track (total 7.) I did something a little on the dumb side. At the track workout I really pushed the 200s out of vanity, it would have been an easy way to get hurt. I have reminded myself this is a distance event not a sprint that I am training for.

Wednesday August 14: 2 miles on 15% incline on the treadmill 50 push ups and 100 sit ups.

Friday August 16: 14 miles, I got up early for this one.

Saturday August 17: 11.5 miles in the morning, then Cindy and me drove down to Rockville for the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8k, What a great race! I will be doing this one again it was a lot of fun plus we met up with the dailymile team and had drinks after the race and a little late night food. Good times.

Sunday August 18: As you can imagine it was tough getting up for this run. I didn’t get started until close to noon. It was super hot and humid out. The best thing I can say about this one is that I got it done.

Through my TransRockies Run I am trying to help children in Baltimore that are suffering. Please help me raise funds for the Baltimore Child Abuse Center

Here are my thoughts a day after the run:

Crazy hard! My favorite part of the race other than finishing it was meeting and hanging out with Andy and Steve. This was a tough hilly course (9,800 feet of elevation) and it took everything I could give it. at one point I even ran .2 miles in the wrong direction whoops! The ultra marathon has such a different vibe from every other run I have ever done. There is a lot of camaraderie at the HAT. There were so many steep inclines and declines in the race, it really sapped your legs. While it did get hot, I don’t think it effected my performance. I drank a ton of water. We were able to stop at the pavillion a little more than half way through. I took advantage of this and changed my socks, shirt, applied more body glide, and got something to eat before heading back out for the second long loop.

On the second loop I filled my water bottle with ice water, I think it saved my life and gave me the strength to finish. I ended up making friends with a woman that I ran the last 5 miles with. We really helped each other finish the race. We ended up finishing side by side with the same time. We high fived and gave each other a hug. It was a great way to finish. Andy, Steve, Jeanne, Jeanne’s BFF Coleen, Matt, Adam, and some BRRC members hung out after the finish line. We had beers, hot dogs, and french fries to celebrate. It was so much fun to hang out with the DMers after the race.

I will probably run another 50k someday, but I don’t think it will be the HAT, it was tough! It made me rethink my TransRockies run this August, but only for a little bit. If they had an emoticon for Brutal or kicked my ass, I would use that. -believe in the run

On Saturday I met up with Jeanne, Paul Gochar, Bobby O’Kane, and Wendell to run the trails in Patapsco State Park. The video does not do the hills and mud justice. This was a tough hilly muddy 8 mile mess.

Sunday, Jeanne and I met up for a 14 mile run through Baltimore and the rain. Fellow Dailymiler’s Brodie W. and Brian B. joined us for the run. Running with friends sure makes the nasty weather easier to take. If you are on Dailymile friend these runners, they are great people.

(6.52 miles) on Jan. 7, 2010. I thought a few people might sign up for the challenge, after all, Andy is a popular figure on the site. To my surprise over 40 people signed up! The virtual turn out was great! I decided as a tribute to Andy I would transform myself into Andy. How would I do that? In all the pictures I have seen of Andy, he wears a yellow tech shirt and a white doo rag. In the picture you can see how the “Andy” affected me.

Andy's profile picture

Check out some of the responses to the posting of the before and after pick:

“LOL! You definitely look better in the after shot.” – Andy O.

“Now I am really nervous about my run later. My wife might leave me if I start trying to rock a doo-rag.” – Caleb M.

“This made me LOL OUT LOUD VERY LOUD!!!” – Michelle

“This is pure awesomeness.” – David D.

“Good one Thomas. Great challenge you set up here….inspiring a ton of people in the process.” – Steve S.

I had a lot of fun with this and it was great to connect with all these runners. I am still amazed at how these social media tools can be used to connect with people that in our offline lives we would never meet, and how those people can touch our lives. I love me some dailymile. – Believe in the run

The course features nearly 9,800 feet of climbing. There is a starting loop of 3.6 miles followed by two identical loops of 13.7 miles. There are 4 stream crossings that can be challenging depending on the water level – there is alway the chance of getting wet feet.”(excerpt from hatrun.com) The race is sold out. I know that Andy O. and Jeanne B. will be running it too.

Ok, you know I love the the gear, so after signing up for the the HAT I used a gift certificate to Dick’s to get a pair of new trail running shoes. I picked up the Adidas Adizero XTs (Runner’s World pick for this years trail shoe.) I haven’t run in them yet but they look great.

Adidas Adizero XT

I am looking forward to this new challenge. The training will help me stay focused and in shape over the winter. I will need to be in great shape as I head into the training season for the GORE-TEX® TransRockies in August.
