Smith Optics Treshold Slider Review

I have tried a few different running eye wear solutions including last year’s Outside Magazine’s best sunglasses pick 2009, the Julbo Trail, Spy Sunglasses, Ray Ban, and more.  I saw the Smith Optics display at my local running store and at REI but I never really considered them.

I was at an REI picking up supplies for the GORE-TEX® TransRockies run and saw a woman in running gear trying on Smith sunglasses and figured I would give them a try since she already had the case unlocked.  When I tried on the Threshold Sliders I was surprised how good they felt on my face.  I did not think they were good looking sunglasses in the case, but I was buying something for running not a fashion show.  I looked in the little mirror and they didn’t look all that bad.  I asked the lady trying them on if she was a runner and if she had worn Smiths before.  She said yes to both questions and went on to say how much she liked her current pair but, she had trashed them and was looking to replace them.  She also said that the glasses looked good on me, I was sold.  I am a sucker for a compliment.

After purchasing them I realized they came with four sets of lens.  This was an awesome surprise.  I was a little skeptical of switching out lens and how sturdy the glasses would be.  I have had the glasses for 2 or 3 months now and they are holding up great.  I have also used 3 of the four sets of lens on different occasions.  I use the rose color lens the most.  On really bright sunny days I use the darker polarized lens, and on my bike on cloudy days I have used the clear lens (the sunglasses fit great with the bike helmet bonus!).

The glasses are extremly comfortable on the face even after 4 hour runs.  They also do a good job when it comes to fogging up.  I have had no issues with fogging and we have had some record breaking temps in Maryland this year along with high humidity.

I bought these glasses for running but I find myself using them for everything.  When I am heading out I reach for the Smith Thresholds every time.  I wish I found these earlier.  I love them and highly recommend these sunglasses for running.  You will end up using them for everything else too.

Week two of TransRockies Training

Jeff and me at the end of 10 miles 8 more to go.

This week seemed a bit easier than last week, it was about 10 miles shorter. Here is the break down:

Monday June 21: off
Tuesday June 22: 6 miles Ran home from work and added on a couple miles
Wednesday June 23: Xtr – Biked to the gym 4 miles, Stairmaster for 20 minutes, treadmill at a 15% elevation and walked as fast as I could for 10 minutes.  Then 125 sit-ups and 50 push-ups
Thursday June 24: 6 miles
Saturday June 26: 10 miles
Sunday June 27: 18 miles – My friend Jeff Arricale and his girlfriend Becky ran 10 miles of this one with me it really helped the miles move along.

I switched up from my Camelbak to a Nathan HPL 020 and packed it with the required items for the TransRockies.  I had 60 oz, of water, two Ginsting Honey Stingers gels, Pentax camera, iPod, Arc’ Teryx GORE-TEX Paclite jacket, Warm hat, gloves, first aid kit, blister kit, and an emergency blanket.  With a full bladder and all that gear the Nathan HPL 020 was only a little over 7 lbs.  I ran the 18 miler on Sunday with the new pack.  It is more comfortable to run with than the Camelbak and I really appreciated having gels easily accessible.  Typically with the Camelbak I would need to take the pack off to get to the gels.  There was less jostling around with the Nathan as well.  I would recommend the Nathan pack for runners.

Running Shoe Review: Saucony Kinvara vs. Newton Gravitas

Saucony has jumped on the minimalist running bandwagon with its recent release of the Saucony Progrid Kinvara, a lightweight (7.70z) training/racing shoe that boasts a smaller-than-usual heel-toe offset of only 4mm (this essentially means that the heel is only 4mm thicker than the forefoot). The upshot of this is that the Kinvara, with it’s relatively flat sole, is better suited than many shoes on the market to promoting a midfoot/forefoot footstrike. We decided to put the Kinvara to the test by having two naturally midfoot striking runners review and compare the Kinvara to another shoe that is designed to promote a midfoot/forefoot strike: the Newton Gravitas. Social Media and Customer Service Done Right.

2009 Baltimore 10 Miler in Newtons

Being part of the marketing community, I hear both sides of the story/argument about social media and branding.  My personal feeling is that if the company uses it correctly, they can boost their brand ambassadors and stay connected to their hardcore fans.  Done incorrectly, it is another way to fail and fail FAST.

This is an example of how a company is doing it right and has won an ambassador.

I have run in Newtons for about two years.  The shoe is designed for the way I naturally run with a mid-foot strike.  For more information on the science behind the shoe watch this video.  I first purchased the Newton Gravitas online.  They did not carry them at my favorite independent running retailer – Charm City Running (at the time.)  The shoes cost more than your average running shoe so my first encounter with @SirIsaac on Twitter was to see if maybe I could get free shipping, after all I was making an $185 investment in a shoe I had never even tried on.  I got a quick response, “No.”  Hmm, I didn’t really like that there was no budge, but I thought if they won’t budge for me they probably don’t budge for others.  I got out my card and ordered the fire red Newton Gravitas.

It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with them.  Weighing in at 10.3 oz, they feel light and fast right out of the box.  I wore them Spring and Summer 2009 during training and races, the longer I wore them the more I loved them.  When it was time to retire them and buy a new shoe, I admit I couldn’t get over the price.  I could buy two pairs of Brooks or Nikes for the price of one pair of Newtons.  I tried several different shoes trying to find the cheaper alternative to the Newtons.  Some shoes worked out fine, but when I bought a pair of the Brooks Defyance 3s, after being fine in the Defyance 2s, well I hated the 3s so much one morning I did something I had never done before.  I reached into the back of my closet and pulled out the Newtons.  I figured I going for a short run anyhow.  Wow! Even a pair of beaten up Gravitas were better then the clunky Defyance 3s.

At this point Charm City Running was now carrying the Newtons.  I stopped in and tried on the Sir Isaacs.  They felt great and I went on a ten mile run and was back in love with Newton.  The Sir Isaacs have a great ride and feel very efficient.  I like to switch out shoes so every other run I was wearing the Nike Lunar Elites.  This was a pretty good combo of shoes for me.  It seems to keep my legs fresh and stretch out the wear and tear on the shoes.

The Newtons have lugs on the tread that help focus your foot strike.  Because of the lugs protrude they start to wear.  This is a good thing, they become less noticeable and also act as an indicator of where and how your foot is striking.  The Sir Isaacs however, started showing unusual wear along the lateral edge.  I only had about 70 miles on the shoes (I track my running shoe miles on dailymile.)

I tweeted to both @CharmCityRunning and @SirIsaac that there was some unusual wear on the shoe.  Right away @SirIssac got back to me and asked me to shoot a picture of the wear on the shoe and email it to Newton’s customer service rep Tory Oakland.  I took pictures of the wear and emailed Tory giving her the relevant details.  Tory asked if she could see some pics of the wear on my old Gravitas.  I gave her pictures of the tread and included some of the Nike Lunar Elites too.  The way my foot strikes and the way the Newton Gravitas wore appeared to be a better fit for me than the Sir Isaacs.  After a short round of courteous emails Tory told me that she would figure out a solution and get back to me.  She ended up giving me two options: 1. Keep the Newton Sir Isaacs and get a really good discount on a pair of Gravitas, or 2. Exchange the Sir Isaacs for a new pair of Gravitas.  Since the damage to the Sir Isaacs was starting to get into the structural part of the shoe, I opted for the second offer and exchanged the shoes.

Wear on the Gravitas

Tory and I started talking about the Newton trail shoe scheduled to be launched around August 2010.  I was interested in seeing if they might come out earlier so I could use them for the TransRockies in August.  Tory ended up putting me in contact with the Newton wear tester program.  Fingers crossed, I filled out my application.  Who knows I may be putting 113 miles across the Rockies this Summer in Newtons!

2010 Newton Gravitas

Yesterday, the new pair of Newton Gravitas arrived with a return UPS label for the Sir Isaacs!  I strapped on the Newtons this morning and went for a four mile run before hopping on my bike to commute to work.  I always log my runs on dailymile, today I dedicated my run to Tory.

Newton makes a great shoe, and they put thought into the way they handled a small issue.  I am very vocal about my likes and dislikes when it comes to gear.  Newton took a potential brand disconnect concerning product quality and solved the issue.  This will not be my last pair of Newtons, and I will be spreading the word about a great minimal shoe that promotes a healthier way to run.  Everyone I came in contact with at Newton helped solve the problem.

Great Gear X-mas Haul

X-Mas Stocking

My Runner's Stocking

My wife is the greatest!  She really took care of me for the holiday.  I may have pointed her in the right direction but, she really came through.  She even had her parents get me gifts from my favorite running store, Charm City Run.  I will start with the Stocking: Six tubes of Nuun (I am on the 2010 Nuun team), One bottle of Sport Wash, Two packs of Clif Shot Bloks, and one chocolate Dove bar.  Ok, so the Dove bar doesn’t exactly fit the category, I will justify it under the heading of motivation.  On to the main event.  First I opened the Saucony Ulti-Mitt Vizi-Pro gloves.  These are great gloves with a lot of features, safety orange day glow color, large areas of reflective material, LED blinking light, retractable mittens that expose gloves, and retratable thumbs and right index finger on the gloves for working iPods and iPhones. Then I opened a package with a pair of Brooks Wanganui Pants “Advanced protection from wind and rain.”  These are some serious winter running pants, with wind and rain resistant materials.  They will be reserved for the coldest rainiest days of the year.  You gotta check them out.  Although I already have a pair of Under Armour compression tights, it was time for another pair and that’s just what I got.  I have tried Asics, Nike, and Craft tights, the simplicity of the Under Armour Cold Gear tights makes them a favorite.  No zipper on the ankle cuff is a good thing and they keep you warm on cold witer days.  Finally I was given a North Face M TKA 100 Glacier 1 Fleece 1/4 zip pull over.  This fleece is just cozy softness.  It will be great for cold days with no rain.  As you can see I was spoiled.  There is still room for new gear, my birthday is only a couple weeks away! – Believe in the run.

Update on Sole Video Contest!

01And the winner is… That’s right, it’s me!  How cool.  I was notified tonight that my video entry won first place, $1000 and $250 in merchandise.  As you might guess I love Sole!  I have actually been a fan of Sole ever since Lisa Batchen-Smith recommended the inserts atfer I got a bad case of Plantar Fasciitis.  Stretching, icing, and sole heat moldable shoe inserts did the trick and got rid of the pain.  Shortly after that I ordered the Sole Sport Flops.  Thanks SOLE!

Running in the dark.

Amphipod

Amphipod

Recently I moved from the city to the burbs.  The biggest difference I have found is safety.  I was actually safer running downtown in Baltimore than I am out here in the county.  I don’t think the drivers are looking for pedestrians.  Not only have I had close calls, I have witnessed other runners almost get hit in cross walks going with the light.  This has convinced me to go full DORK.  I have always run with my RoadID, it makes my wife feel better but, now I have taken safety to a whole new level.  Tonight I ran with my Amphipod reflective belt thingy and a PETZL headlamp.  I admit I felt pretty silly however, something was different in the run tonight.  People saw me.  A car was getting ready to make a left turn through the cross walk I was crossing, I looked right at him with my lamp blazing and he stopped in his tracks.  I felt like I had a new super power.  Other times during the 6 mile run I saw cars take more precaution as they approached, maybe it was just a foot stepping off the gas to slow down and look at the one man light show but, who cares, they saw me.  I felt a little safer.

Another benefit was being able to see the bent up sidewalks in the dark.  So if you see a well lit runner in the Baltimore are give me a wave.

The HAT Run 50k

HatRunI recently signed up for my first 50k trail race in March 2010.  The course is mostly single track trail with a mix of open fields, dirt road and some paved road. The course features nearly 9,800 feet of climbing. There is a starting loop of 3.6 miles followed by two identical loops of 13.7 miles. There are 4 stream crossings that can be challenging depending on the water level – there is alway the chance of getting wet feet.”(excerpt from hatrun.com)  The race is sold out.  I know that Andy O. and Jeanne B. will be running it too.

Ok, you know I love the the gear, so after signing up for the the HAT I used a gift certificate to Dick’s to get a pair of new trail running shoes.  I picked up the Adidas Adizero XTs (Runner’s World pick for this years trail shoe.)  I haven’t run in them yet but they look great.

I am looking forward to this new challenge.  The training will help me stay focused and in shape over the winter.  I will need to be in great shape as I head into the training season for the GORE-TEX® TransRockies in August.
