The Brian A. Hill Challenge

Brian lives in the 3rd city Chicago so, we will run a minimum of 3 miles for this challenge. There are not many hills in Chicago, but you need hills to make you stronger. This week do a 3 mile hill work out. If like Brian you don’t have hills near you, head to the treadmill for a hill workout!

Kate M. Haiku Challenge

After last weeks challenge inspired by Stephanie, We asked Stephanie if someone inspires her. ” Kate M.… she was my first DM friend. she introduced me to her friends. then we actually got to meet up for a run…..right before she pulled her groin. she hasn’t been able to run lately and we can inspire people to run FOR her! So, she can feel the miles being sent! ;) ” So this week we are doing a Haiku challenge for Kate. Haiku is 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable poetry. Run 5.75 miles and write your update in Haiku format. Have fun with this one.

Goal: Everybody tries to run 5.75 mi

Warrior Challenge Video

This challenge is based on the Warrior Challenge RTR episode 1. Run one mile at the end of the mile crawl on hands and knees for a minimum of 25 feet preferably in a high visibility spot 2.Run one mile, light an object on fire and leap over it 3. Run one mile, drink a beer or the beverage of your choice Extra credit if you do the challenge in the buff EXTRA EXTRA credit if you submit a picture of yourself doing the challenge in the buff (please blur out the appropriate bits :) As always you can always run more mileage, crawl further, and drink more.

Dailymile Challenges Believe in the Run EXCLUSIVE

I am having too much fun here.  I started with the “Andy” and it has taken off.  Each week I have been giving a challenge to my Dailymile.com friends.  It is an open invitation so they can invite their friends.  I usually try to have the challenge relate to a specific runner, and the goals are reasonable for most runners to complete.  The response has been great, each challenge has had over 100 participants.  Other challenges average under 10.  Here is last weeks challenge, the Honest Abe.

Sneak peak at this weeks challenge: This challenge is based on one of the runners I have known the longest on dailymile.com, Steve Speirs.  Steve created the 100 Push-Ups, 200 Sit-Ups, 200 Squats programs.  His book 100 Push Ups is available on Amazon.com.  I have been using the iPhone App version of all the workouts and I love them.  Warning they are tough! Learn more about Steve at his website Run Bulldog Run.

Here is the challenge Steve created for this week: 1 mile run, 10 push-ups, 1 mile run, 20 squats, 1 mile run, 30 crunches, 1 mile run – OR -a 4 mile run followed/preceded by the 10 push-ups, 20 squats, 30 crunches!  I will be publishing the challenge on Dailymile.com tomorrow afternoon.

A week of Jeanne

I am training for the HAT 50k with my friend Jeanne Bayers, so we have been spending more time with each other as of late.  Jeanne also was the first to complete an “Andy” last week, so this week over 100 Dailymilers ran 3.42 miles to complete a “Jeanne” (her Boston Marathon time of 3 hours 42 minutes).

On Saturday I met up with Jeanne, Paul Gochar, Bobby O’Kane, and Wendell to run the trails in Patapsco State Park.  The video does not do the hills and mud justice.  This was a tough hilly muddy 8 mile mess.

Sunday, Jeanne and I met up for a 14 mile run through Baltimore and the rain.  Fellow Dailymiler’s Brodie W. and Brian B. joined us for the run.  Running with friends sure makes the nasty weather easier to take.  If you are on Dailymile friend these runners, they are great people.

Happy New Year! Charm City Running’s Resolution 5k

Resolution Run 5k

This was an interesting day, and the most unusual 5k yet.  It had nothing to do with the event itself.  The event was well organized, I liked the course, and everyone looked quite happy.  I do wish they had early packet pick up at the Charm City Run store in Timonium.  I hate the extra stress of getting the numbers at the race.

So, I will give you a little back story first.  Earlier last week I signed my wife and I up for the race with the idea that I would push Theo in the B.O.B. Stroller.  We went over to a neighbors house on New Year’s Eve and I asked if they would be interested in running the race with us.  The wife Mara is a runner and her husband Brett is getting interested in running.  They also have a 2 year old and a 4 month old child that they would push too.  The race starts at 2 in the afternoon so you can drink and still clear your head before the run.  So now everyone is in and it sounds like we will have a lot of fun.

So we make it to the race and Theo is not interested in being in the stroller but, he accepts it for the time being.  Mara, Brett, Rachael, and Colin (The Shaws) are all doing great with their stroller.  We rush over to registration to get our numbers and while I am pinning my number on I hear the horn go off three minutes early.  We all hustle over to the start and join the runners.  Theo did fine for the first mile and then he started pitching a fit.  The only thing that calmed him was letting him out of the stroller so he could run too.  Theo is one year old, while I am a proud papa, he is not that fast yet.  Let me clarify, if there is a room you don’t want him to go into or an open refrigerator, he is lightning fast, a blur!  But distance events he is not that fast.  We told Mara and Brett to go ahead and we walked with Theo for about three quarters of a mile.  Then I put him back in the stroller with his screaming protests and just suffered the “Why did you bring your kid out here on this frigid day” looks from the other runners.  We eventually finished, snapped a quick photo with the Shaws (see below), and tried to make it to the post race chili. Theo would not have it so I skipped the chili (groan) and headed back home.

The funny thing is, although it did not go as planned and was all around out of control, we had a good time.  It was fun to go out on New Year’s Day and do something as a family with some friends.  Theo did great in the stroller for the 5 mile Turkey trot on Thanksgiving so, we will give it another shot again and see if maybe it was a fluke.

Great Gear X-mas Haul

My Runner's Stocking

My wife is the greatest!  She really took care of me for the holiday.  I may have pointed her in the right direction but, she really came through.  She even had her parents get me gifts from my favorite running store, Charm City Run.  I will start with the Stocking: Six tubes of Nuun (I am on the 2010 Nuun team), One bottle of Sport Wash, Two packs of Clif Shot Bloks, and one chocolate Dove bar.  Ok, so the Dove bar doesn’t exactly fit the category, I will justify it under the heading of motivation.  On to the main event.  First I opened the Saucony Ulti-Mitt Vizi-Pro gloves.  These are great gloves with a lot of features, safety orange day glow color, large areas of reflective material, LED blinking light, retractable mittens that expose gloves, and retratable thumbs and right index finger on the gloves for working iPods and iPhones. Then I opened a package with a pair of Brooks Wanganui Pants “Advanced protection from wind and rain.”  These are some serious winter running pants, with wind and rain resistant materials.  They will be reserved for the coldest rainiest days of the year.  You gotta check them out.  Although I already have a pair of Under Armour compression tights, it was time for another pair and that’s just what I got.  I have tried Asics, Nike, and Craft tights, the simplicity of the Under Armour Cold Gear tights makes them a favorite.  No zipper on the ankle cuff is a good thing and they keep you warm on cold witer days.  Finally I was given a North Face M TKA 100 Glacier 1 Fleece 1/4 zip pull over.  This fleece is just cozy softness.  It will be great for cold days with no rain.  As you can see I was spoiled.  There is still room for new gear, my birthday is only a couple weeks away! – Believe in the run.

HAT 50k Training Officially Starts

HatRunTomorrow marks the official start of my training for the HAT 50k (The Hinte Anderson Trail 50K Run).  I will actually drop miles initially, but it wont be long before they are back up and exceeding my current weekly mileage.  The challenge will be finding good long trails to train on.  Take a look at the video from last years run.  It looks like this is going to be a muddy run!
