Women’s Ultimate Softshell Jacket from ashmei

ashmei doesn’t mess around when it comes to athletic apparel. Everything I’ve seen and worn is top-notch and the women’s Ultimate Softshell Jacket is no exception.

Let’s start with the design. This jacket is sleek. When I first took it out of the box I immediately put it on and didn’t want to take it off. This is one of those jackets that gets you excited to head out for a run in the cold, wet rain. That is hard to do.

The fit is perfection; it’s snug (ashmei calls it a “tailored cycle fit”) but not overly so. I could easily wear a base layer and feel comfortable. It’s designed with a stretchy material so you don’t even feel like you’re wearing a full jacket. There is no restriction of movement while running. You could easily do speed work in this guy. The back is designed with merino wool to keep you warm and the front is completely water & wind proof.

The details on this garment are notable. The waistband is lined with an elastic material that keeps the jacket snug and the cold air out. The wrist bands come with a thumbhole and both are lined with a stretch elastic material. The front zipper is offset and zips up at an angle. Regardless if its a performance enhancing feature, it looks cool. ashmei also added two side zippers for quick ventilation. I didn’t use these out on the run, but it’s an ideal feature for the ever-changing weather in Baltimore.

In additional to the ventilation pockets, the jacket is designed with a small front and back pocket perfect for a key, credit card, Gu or whatever small items you like to have out on the run. Finally, reflective strips are placed on the shoulders, along the back, and on the front and back zipper pockets.

This jacket performed great in weather ranging from 25 – 55 degrees (Fahrenheit). Considering the thin material, I was amazed at how warm it felt. The added reflectivity makes it great for the early morning runs and the overall look makes it ideal for the post-run bar. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a fan.

So what does this amazing jacket cost you? Unfortunately, quite a bit. The Ultimate Softshell Jacket retails for $325. While that is certainly an expense, I assure you it will be your new favorite running jacket.
